Benji Batten takes the 3rd Annual MTFC Club Championship

Following in the footsteps of Carl Young in 2013 and Peter Thomas in 2014, Benji Batten took the 2015 edition of the Melbourne TFC Club championship in a tournament which marked 2 years since the formation of the club.

In Group A Benji Batten rose to the top after 5-0 wins over newcomer Simon Chamravi and Reuben Haughey, a special guest from Adelaide TFC before a tight 2-0 victory over David Simpson. David edged Reuben by a 2-0 score line and after a 5-0 victory over Simon, he ensured he would progress to the second round.  With one final spot available in the second round, the match between Reuben and Simon went down to the wire, with Reuben ultimately prevailing (1-0).

Group B had 5 players which made for some thrilling action. Luke Radziminski made the perfect start after a 3-0 victory over Gili Inbar and a 2-1 win over young Benjamin Ng, but losses against Dillon izon (0-1) and Benny Ng (1-2) meant Luke would have to be content with 3rd place in the group.

Dillon Izon and Benny Ng were on fire throughout the group stage notching up 3 wins each meaning their final game would decide who took the top spot and an automatic bye to the semi-finals. Dillon fired two goals early but Benny clawed his way beack meaning the match would finish a 2-2 draw, however Dillon’s superior goal difference gave him the semi-final spot.

In the Barrage Round, Benny Ng powered past Reuben Haughey (5-0) and Luke Radziminski caused an upset defeating David Simpson by two goals to nil.

The Semi-Final Stage featured two very tight matches. Luke Radziminski narrowly edged Dillon Izon (1-0) which reversed their scoreline in the group stage. Benji Batten and Benny Ng battled out the other match. Benji took the lead in the first half, but benny equalized mid-way through the second half, meaning the game would go to a penalty shootout. Benji reversed the result from the February cup and progressed to meet Luke in the final.

In the 3rd Place Playoff, Benny Ng and Dillon Izon played out a thriller. No goals after full time, the match went into two halves of extra time with Benny winning by two goals to one (2-1).

The Final was a tight affair with Luke playing precisely but unable to take his chances. Benji was able to hit him twice on the counter and despite a late scare from Luke, he was able to hold on to take a 2-1 Victory and the Club Championship.

MTFC would like to thank all players who came, in particular Reuben from Adelaide and new player Simon Chamravi. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.
