2017 Spring League Cup – Subbuteo Parramatta Leg

IMG_0084Following the completion of the Spring League, being run in three of Sydney’s club – Northern Falcons TFC, Subbuteo Parramatta and Sydney TFC – the final three weeks of November were set aside for each club to take a turn hosting a WASPA tournament. The last of these was held by Subbuteo Parramatta at their Bella Vista Good Games headquarters. Nine players joined in, most of who had not been able to play in any of the other two tournaments in the previous weeks.

Eliot Kennedy, Steve Dettre and Adrian Elmer were seeded into the three groups, with the other six players randomly placed. Steve Diasinos and Gordy Dudley assured organisers they would be arriving, just a little late, but double checks were made to ensure they were heading to the correct venue – you can never be too careful with these two. After a year without playing, Jordan Kolaczyk was also making a return, sporting his newly hand-painted i-Base Professionals.

IMG_0088The opening round of games through up a few surprises. In Group 1, Dave Sultana was at his consistent best and held top seed, Eliot, to a goalless draw. In Group 3, Kostas Barbaris showed the results of a few months’ solid play against some of Australia’s best players within his own club, Sydney TFC, his defensive flicking being particularly good and surprising Adrian with two quick, well worked goals. Adrian pulled one back just before half time and found an equaliser a few minutes before full time but Kosta was unfortunate that his immense improvement this season was not rewarded more. Meanwhile, in Group 2, Falcon Steve Dettre edged past club mate Adrian Grunbach with a 2-1 victory, Adrian’s late surge making Steve very nervous. The second phase saw Dave eventually take hold of his match against Jordan, who was having his first flick since the 2016 Spring League, with Dave taking the honours 2-0. Adrian G and Gordy played out a tight affair, Adrian scoring a solitary goal to earn the 3 points. Meanwhile, in a real arm wrestle, the two Greeks, Kostas and Steve Diasinos, took each other to the wire, with Steve also finally coming out with a single goal victory. In the final group matches, Eliot gave Jordan a bit of a Subbuteo lesson as Jordan grew increasingly desperate to get forward possession. Steve Dettre managed to squeeze one goal past Gordy Dudley who was defiant in his defence. Steve did have one shot right on full-time which found the net. It was unclear to all involved whether it had happened before or after the final whistle, however, so a 1-0 scoreline was settled on. Steve Diasinos had all the possession and applied all the pressure in the opening five minutes of his game against Adrian E, culminating in a beautiful shot on the run that sailed goalward. Somehow, Adrian managed to grab his ‘keeper with his left hand and get it in the way of the shot, the rebound ending deep in Steve’s half. One possession and three flicks later, the ball was in the back of Steve’s goal from a shot from an acute angle by Adrian. The circumstances of the goal turned the game on its head, finishing 3-0 to Adrian, a scoreline which flattered him but which he was delighted to inflict on Steve.

In the Repechage play-offs, Kostas and Gordy played out a 0-0 draw before each putting a solitary goal past Jordan, making for a very democratic conclusion. The Barrage round saw a typically tight tussle between Subbuteo Parramatta club mates Adrian E and Dave. Adrian managed to score a solitary goal to maintain his unbeaten competitive record against Dave. Meanwhile, in their first ever match up, Adrian G gave Steve Diasinos a spanking, slotting 3 unanswered goals past Steve’s ‘keeper. Adrian E than, unfortunately, ran into a brick wall in the shape of the diminutive Eliot. Eliot bossed the match and ran out a 4-0 winner. Meanwhile, Steve Dettre controlled the bulk of the possession in his semi against Adrian E, but couldn’t find a way past Adrian’s staunch defence (though Adrian was lucky to see one of Steve’s shots rebound off his unattended goalkeeper). Adrian, however, did manage some of his own counterattacks and 2 of these resulted in goals, one in each half.

IMG_0107Dave maintained Steve Diasinos’ misery in the 5th/6th play-off, putting one goal past his team mate. Meanwhile, Adrian G made a complete about face from the opening round encounter with Steve Dettre, taking a 3-0 lead into the half-time break. Steve came out with a better performance after the break, winning the half but still succumbing 4-2 in the 3rd/4th play-off. The grand-final saw the tournaments two shortest players face-off (something to do with centres of gravity being an advantage or something). In a fairly dour, technical match, Eliot pressed for much of the game, as he usually does, but Adrian’s defensive organisation and flicking were meaning his ‘keeper had little to do. Midway through the second half, however, Eliot got the half chance that was all he needed after a poor defensive flick from Adrian, and took the lead. Adrian attempted to take the game to Eliot but didn’t create any meaningful chances, meaning Eliot was able to take the tournament with a 1-0 victory.

Another great evening of friendly rivalry. As always, a great thanks to Nathan at Bella Vista Good Games for hosting us with lots of room for our pitches. Over the three weeks of Spring League Cup tournaments, 17 different players were able to take part. Many have one eye on the Asian Cup approaching in January and the series proved to be an invaluable opportunity for all players to continue improving.

2017 Sydney International Open Tournament Report

As far as can be seen from the current records available to us, the 2017 Sydney International Open was the second largest one-off Subbuteo tournament ever held in Australia, its 43 competitors falling just a couple short of the legendary 1988 Sydney Open. With two days of action and seven different competitions taking place, there was no shortage of competitive fun for all involved. A strong contingent from Melbourne made their way up, with others coming from Berry, Brisbane and Singapore.

The room in full swing - Women's tournament in the foreground, Teams to the back and Junior WASPA on the left.

The room in full swing – Women’s tournament in the foreground, Teams to the back and Junior WASPA on the left.

Saturday saw two FISTF tournaments take place, the Women’s tournament and the club Team’s Tournament. In the former, the Elmer sisters played out a goalless stalemate in their opening round game before Charlotte Wright from Melbourne lost one game to Æowyn and won the other against Imojjen. This was enough to set up a rematch between her and Æowyn in the final. However, Æowyn’s experience came through and she was able to take her first ever FISTF title with a 1-0 win in the grand final.

The Teams was a much more complex proposition. Top seeds, the Northern Falcons, were drawn against Sydney East’s Hipfingerz and a Barbarians team – players from a variety of clubs without their own team for the tournament who banded together. In the other group, Subbuteo Parramatta drew Sydney TFC (largely made of players who had helped earn Subbuteo Parramatta their 2nd seeding!) and the traveling Western Flickers from Melbourne. The group stages went according to the form guide, with the Falcons gliding past their opponents and Sydney TFC making similarly light work of Group Two. The Barbarians managed to edge Hipfingerz in Group One, but the Hipfingerz went through by virtue of the fact that, as an unrecognised FISTF outfit, the Barbarians were not permitted past the group stages. Which left the match between Subbuteo Parramatta and the Western Flickers as the main point of interest for the group stages. While Benny Ng snagged one point for the team from Melbourne, the other three games went the way of the hosts, giving them a berth against the Falcons in the semis.

Sydney TFC continued their whitewash record with another four wins over their Hipfingerz opponents in one of the semi finals. Subbuteo Parramatta went into their semi knowing they had a glimmer of hope if they could all perform at their best. However, only Paul Magee could follow through on the promise, the Falcons putting Subbuteo Parramatta to the sword, exemplified by a 3-1 victory by Adrian Grunbach over ex-team mate Richard Wilson in their first competitive match in 20 years, and a 6-0 master class by Steve Dettre against the hapless Adrian Elmer.

Teams finalists – Sydney TFC and Northern FAlcons TFC

The final turned out to be the most evenly balanced in Australian Subbuteo history, going down as a final for the ages. With 5 minutes of the contest remaining, the Falcons had a 2-1 lead and one hand on the winners’ certificates. However, in a pulsating final few minutes, both Tony Credentino and Raffaele Lombard were able to put equalisers past their respective opponents, Hermann Kruse and Eliot Kennedy, to leave three of the four games as draws when the final whistle blew. This meant that Fabrizio Coco’s sole victory, against Adrian Grunbach, was enough to give Sydney TFC a 1-0 victory and the title!

The gang share a meal.

The gang share a meal.

While all this was taking place, the collected juniors and eliminated opens players all played respective WASPA tournaments, with Oliver Ollnow coming out on top in the Juniors and Benji Batten claiming his first title in some time in the Opens. The excellent day’s play concluded with a live broadcast draw for Sunday’s two FISTF tournaments, and then two thirds of the players heading out for a dinner together at Frango’s, a great time of catching up with old friends and establishing new friendships.

Sunday morning saw an eager crowd gathering early outside our venue – Good Games Bella Vista – for a bright and early beginning to the individual Opens and Juniors FISTF tournaments. In the Juniors, twelve competitors were split into 3 groups for the early rounds. These went to form with seeded players, Jonty Brener, Oliver Ollnow and Daniel Sirmai each topping their groups. Charlotte Wright backed up her performance from Saturday’s Women’s tournament with a solid showing, going down 1-0 to new player Thorben Pfister in the barrage. In the semi’s, Jonty put two past Thorben, while Daniel Sirmai and Oliver Ollnow played out a thrilling 2-2 draw, Oliver finally taking the tie with an extra time winner. So, the final pitted the two rivals from Saturday’s Junior WASPA final against each other yet again. This time, Jonty put up a far sterner fight and neither player could wrestle an advantage during either normal or extra time. So, as the players from the Opens tournament gathered around, the two went to a shootout. In the end, Jonty held his nerve to take an extremely close fought 3-2 shots victory and claim his second FISTF tournament win.

The Opens saw a large field split into 7 groups. Here, again, the seeded players all managed to take top spot in their groups though not without the occasional scare. Recently returning to the game, Stephen Wright from Western Flickers sent a few small shockwaves around the venue when he accounted for Steve Dettre in their group clash, the battle of the Lombardi brothers went down to the wire before Raffaele prevailed, and Adrian Elmer was almost able to eke out a draw against a nervous Benny Ng before Benny’s experience held out.

The barrage round is where the dust really settled, with each of the top seven seeds making their way to the quarter-finals, joined by the founder of Australia’s newest club, Northern Phoenix’s Christos Garagounis. The extremely tight field meant that predictions from here on were impossible. A rollercoaster game saw Benny Ng come from behind to defeat his old nemesis, Benji Batten; Raffaele Lombardi narrowly accounted for Eliot Kennedy in the latest chapter of their ongoing rivalry, needing an extra time winner; Fabrizio Coco began to stamp his authority on the tournament with a 4-0 win over Steve Dettre, while Bernard Lim was getting into the swing with a 2-0 win over Christos. In the semis, Bernard made a big statement with a clear 3-1 victory over Raffaele, while Fabrizio edged Benny 2-1. Which set up a grand final showdown between the tournament’s top two seeded players.

Bernard tips another of Fabrizio’s shots wide in the grand final

The grand final, however, didn’t start out as the tight tussle most were expecting. In the 9th minute, Bernard scored his third unanswered goal, his complete domination meaning the game seemed over almost before it had begun. Collecting himself, however, Fabrizio managed to claw a goal back just before half time to give himself hope for the second half. After a five minute break the players came back out and things changed dramatically. Bernard struggled to get a touch and, when he did, could not mount any significant forays into Fabrizio’s territory. The entire half was completely dominated by Fabrizio who forced corner after corner from Bernard’s last line of staunch defence. Midway through the half, he finally broke and Fabrizio was within a single goal of drawing level. The same pattern continued, with Fabrizio battering Bernard and Bernard holding on tight – with his excellent defensive flicks and, when needed, the odd great save from his ‘keeper. In the end, the opening three minutes, where Bernard scored two goals, proved to be the telling segment of the game. Fabrizio could simply not get through for an equaliser and Bernard held on to claim victory, and the title, in a titanic grand final struggle, 3-2.

Most of the weekend's competitiors.

Most of the weekend’s competitiors.

Four tightly contested grand finals in the weekend’s FISTF tournaments were testament to the success of the tournament, where every player played with determination, balanced by an overwhelming spirit of fair play across the weekend. A huge thanks to all who turned out to make this one of the most successful tournaments in our game’s history in Australia, traveling from far and wide to be here, and an extra thanks to our host – Nathan at Good Games Bella Vista – for supplying us with an excellent venue and all the support he gave in setting up, running and packing down the tournament. With plans already afoot to make the next tournament at the venue even better, the only way is up for our great game.

2017 September Cup Tournament Report

Steve Dettre and his 1966 flats

Steve Dettre and his 1966 flats

A field of 8 players, ranging from some of Australia’s most experienced table footballers to brand new players, gathered to contest the 2017 September Cup, the 13th edition of this annual tournament. The rules of The September Cup stipulate that only Subbuteo branded bases, goalkeepers, pitches and balls are to be used, so the event is always a fun one where players get to reminisce and pull out their old teams. This year, Steve Dettre went all out and used his original ‘flats’, purchased by his dad in 1966 and still going strong. Meanwhile Paul Magee used the Celtic team he’s had since 1969 – that’s over 100 years of Subbuteo history in those two teams, and players, alone!

Eliot and Adrian soak in the spring afternoon.

Eliot and Adrian soak in the spring afternoon.

Two groups were created for the initial stages. Adrian Elmer, using his hand painted España ’96 squad on 90s bases, faced Eliot Kennedy, using his 1970s heavyweights. Eliot took the lead but Adrian was able to peg back a goal to see the match end in a draw. Meanwhile, in the other group, Dave Sultana took the early initiative in the group of death with a 1-0 win over Paul Magee (a club league fixture between the two two days earlier had seen Paul get up by two goals to nil) while Tony Credentino scored a dramatic last minute equaliser in his match against Steve. In the second round of games, Eliot taught new player, Jason Potter, the ins and outs of the game – Jason using his billiards experience to quickly get on top of flicking angles. Costa Kamarados, playing with his early 80s lightweights, bought as part of a World Cup Edition box set at an Op Shop a year or so ago for just $2, went down 2-0 to Adrian, Paul and Tony played out a goalless stalemate and Dave continued his fine form with another 1-0 victory over Steve. In the third round of group games, Adrian saw off Jason 1-0 as Jason began to work out some solid tactical ploys, while Eliot put Costa to the sword. In the other group, Dave was already guaranteed of top spot but the other three all had a chance of progressing, depending on the results. Tony couldn’t get over Dave to force home his slight advantage, meaning Steve slipped past him with a slim victory over Paul. In a final catchup game, Costa finally found his touch, slotting three unanswered goals past Jason.

The Repechage Semi-Finals saw relatively comfortable wins for Tony and Paul, while the main Semi Finals were much tighter affairs. Adrian continued his unbeaten record over Dave, though the tight game could have gone either way. The other semi final, between, the two old sparring partners, Eliot and Steve, resulted in the tournament’s only shoot-out. Eliot put his shoot-out hoodoo to rest, finally taking the victory after seven shots each, to go to the Grand Final.

6 of the 8 starters.

6 of the 8 starters.

In the Repechage Grand Final, a goal from Tony finally managed to split he and Paul after their earlier goalless draw. In the Grand Final, Eliot and Adrian also faced each other for a second time, having met in the group stage. This time, Adrian scored the first goal towards the end of the second half. Eliot pressed hard for the equaliser in the second. The final few minutes saw him completely dominate possession, but an off-side figure that couldn’t be moved meant he was unable to enter the shooting area while Adrian kept his defence well organised. In the end, Adrian was able to hold on, in the process staging just the second successful title defence in the tournament’s long history.

An absolutely great afternoon played in the best spirits, with the different cloth and nylon pitches and the wild variety of curling and bobbling bases and figures adding an extra element of fun. See you all again next September!

Mat takes on Richard on the near table, with Adrian C battling Dave at the back

Mat takes on Richard on the near table, with Adrian C battling Dave at the back

Western Flickers’ Adrian Connolly was heading to Parramatta for a week of business, so the Subbuteo Parramatta club held a WASPA tournament to give him something to do while he was away from home. Adrian had sharpened his skills at the Victorian Championships the previous weekend and was looking to put them to use. Meanwhile, the Subbuteo Parramatta club was using its new clubhouse at Good Games Bella Vista for their first ever Opens WASPA tournament.

With 5 players making their way to the midweek competition, a straight league was settled upon as the best way to go. The opening round saw Adrian C take out a 2 goal victory over Richard with Adrian E doing the same against Dave. In the second round of games, things got really tight – Richard and Adrian E slugging out a 0-0 draw and Mat peppering Dave’s goal, only to see everything saved or hit the woodwork. Then, in the final minute of the game, with his first shot of the game, Dave slipped one past Mat’s ‘keeper with the ensuing victory dance telling the full story! Dave followed this up with another 1-0 win, this time over Richard, while Adrian C continued to build an impressive run with a 2-0 victory over Mat. The 4th round fixtures saw a very tight 0-0 between Adrian C and Dave, while Adrian E got over Mat by the solitary goal. This left Dave, Adrian C and Adrian E all on 7 points with one round remaining. Unfortunately, Dave had the final bye so wouldn’t be able to take the title, leaving the match between the two Adrians as the virtual final.

In the final games, Mat picked up his first points of the tournament with a goalless draw with Richard. Adrian and Adrian squared up and the game, as was typical of all the evening’s matches, was an incredibly tight affair. However, late in the first half, the Melburnian made a beautiful incisive flick and shot on the run, putting the ball into the goal with the Sydney-sider not even behind his goal line. Holding on to his lead for the rest of the fixture meant that Adrian C would return home with the title, having seen off all his Subbuteo Parramatta opponents.

Subbuteo Parramatta Junior WASPA Tournament – Autumn 2017

group photoSchool holidays can only mean one thing, the return of Subbuteo Parramatta’s Junior Subbuteo Tournament. This autumn, the club took the opportunity to try out a new venue – the newly opened Good Games store in Bella Vista. Suffice to say all who attended were impressed by the space, the lighting and the hospitality provided, so much so that the club has now decided to use the shop as their new permanent clubhouse.

Seven players lined up for the tournament and, for the first time in Australian history (maybe even the world, anyone got access to all the records?!), the females outnumbered the males in an open tournament. With a couple of those involved in their first ever junior tournament, the future looks bright.

Players were divided into two groups. WASPA rankings were used to seed two players into each group, the others placed randomly to fill them up. Oliver was the dark horse – not having played as many tournaments as others, his ranking didn’t place him as a seeded player, but his intense practise over the last 6 months meant that he was poised to give the seeded players a shake. The group games were all very even, with 2 goals being the greatest margin in any fixture. At the conclusion of the group matches, the places all went according to seeds, except for Group Two, which turned out to be something of a group of death. Oliver made good on his dark horse status, taking his place at the expense of Imojjen, who lost both her fixtures in incredibly close 1-0 results to Oliver and Jonty. Meanwhile, Jonty and Oliver, with identical results and a head-to-head draw, had to go to a shootout to decide first and second place in the group. Oliver came out on top in a tight tussle.

In the repechage, Imojjen beat the day’s youngest competitor, Catherine, by a single goal to set up a final game against her good friend, Maddy. The two then played out a scoreless draw, the fatigue of a few hours’ straight Subbuteo play taking its toll.

The semi-finals saw Daniel line up against Jonty and Oliver faced Æowyn. None of the players could be separated. Oliver and Æowyn both put the ball in the back of the net during their game – Oliver while the referee had stopped play and Æowyn 5 seconds after the half-time whistle – but couldn’t break the deadlock during normal play. Likewise, Daniel and Jonty played out a scoreless draw and so both semis went to shots. Oliver took a straightforward 2-0 shots victory over Æowyn, but Jonty and Daniel needed 10 shots each before they could be separated!

oliver battles jonty in the grand final

Fatigue definitely set in for Æowyn in the 3rd/4th play-off, with Daniel running away with a 3-0 victory. Meanwhile, Jonty and Oliver renewed their group game rivalry and, again, couldn’t be separated. A goal to each left them with their second shootout of the day. This time, however, Jonty turned the tables, taking the match, and the title, with a shot to spare.

An excellent afternoon of Subbuteo with fairplay and friendliness a feature throughout. A big thanks to the parents who brought their children along and hung around to referee and give coaching tips. A big thanks to the Palamaras and the Sirmais who trekked from the opposite side of the city and many many thanks to our wonderful host venue, Bella Vista Good Games. The juniors will be back next holidays!

2017 Australian Grand Prix – WASPA Consolation Tournament

Ross Mcnulty celebrates his victory

Ross Mcnulty celebrates his victory

After the drama of the knockout stages in the AGP17 the 3rd and 4th players in the group of four advanced into a WASPA Knockout Tournament that ran alongside the Knockout stages of the AGP17. In a thrilling competition full of incidents and some truly special goals Mcnulty clinched victory to head 4,000 miles back to Perth with another title in the bag.

In the first of 2 Elimination play offs to make the Quarter Final Chris Thorn turned on a spectacular display too dispose of local junior, Andrew Kuany, in emphatic style with a 3-0 win. In the 2nd Elimination Play Off Yago Dzezlalija also put on a superb display in a 3-0 win against another local junior, Othniel Antwi, in a gripping match that really showcased the beauty of Subbuteo in its finest essence.

In the first of the Quarter Finals Ross Mcnulty came up against Jeremy Simpson and his dangerous Leicester City Tokas. After an even start, Mcnulty began to dominate play and took the lead just before half time. Simpson tried his all and cannoned a shot against the post but Mcnulty broke quickly and rasped a fine strike past the helpless keeper to go 2 up with 5mins left. Simpson did his all but could not break down the organised defence of Mcnulty’s Manchester City Tcha Arrows team and another goal was added to complete his advance into the Semi Finals. Chris Thorn took on Kostas Barbaris In the 2nd game of the Quarter finals and yet again remained water tight at the back. The veteran 74yr old dominated and took the lead just before half time with a wonderfully constructed goal of sheer patience that paid off. In the second half Kostas put Thorn under pressure but could not break down the defence and half way through the half Thorn added another beauty to join his club mate Mcnulty in the Semi Finals. In the 3rd game of the Quarter Finals, local Greek-Australian lad, Terry Koutzas, faced Melbourne girl and current Ladies No 1, Beth Eveleigh. Again another very tight match was played out with Beth remaining extremely organised at the back and they headed into half time at 0-0. Koutzas finally broke away after a sustained period of pressure midway through the second half and although Beth rallied she could not equalize, Koutzas advancing into the Semi Finals. In the 4th and final Quarter Final Richard Wilson was pitted against Yago Dzelalija and another classic encounter was evident with the first half ending 0-0 with each player going close on numerous occasions. In the 2nd half, Wilson and his dangerous Tokas smashed in an unstoppable shot that nearly took the net out and Yago crashed out after such a valiant effort in another cracker.

Chris Thorne buries his first in his semi final shootout against Terry Koutzas

Chris Thorne buries his first in his semi final shootout against Terry Koutzas

The first Semi Final pitted Chris Thorn against the local Terry Koutzas and after both defences were so organised the game headed into extra time, again they could not be separated and the game headed into shots. After the required 5 shots each, scores were tied at 3 each, so they went into sudden death. Thorn missed his first and Koutzas made no mistake to propel himself into the Final and deny Thorn of a possible show down with other Perth local Mcnulty. In the 2nd Semi Final Mcnulty faced Richard Wilson and his ever dangerous Tokas and after a fine quick counter attack a shot was placed into the top corner from the right too put him 1 up at half time. Wilson really went for it in the 2nd half and duly snatched a deserved equalizer with minutes left on the clock after a great strike. Into extra time and again it remained deadlocked at 1-1 and so the 2nd Semi Final was to be decided on penalties. At 2-2 after 4 penalties each Mcnulty tucked away his 5th and Wilson missed to go out after such a terrific display in the tournament.

The Final was a game littered with quick break aways and tight defensive discipline between Mcnulty & Koutzas but ultimately Mcnulty began to break down The Sydney TFC player and went in 1 up at the break. In the 2nd half Koutzas attempted to get back on level terms but a second and final killer goal landed Mcnulty his first title away from Perth.

Flicks In The Sticks – Western Flickers TFC WASPA Tournament

WESTERN FLICKERS GOES NORTH .. Way North!

untitled-1On a beautiful Melbourne spring day, the Western Flickers family headed up north to the little town of Willowmavin (about 1.5 hours north of Melbourne CBD).
Thus far, all the table football events have been held in metropolitan Melbourne. However, community engagement and promotion of the game in regional Victoria is very much part of the long term development roadmap for Western Flickers TFC.
Despite the long trek, there was a great turnout of 8 flickers in the Open category and 3 kids in the Junior category. There were also a few non-players – like locally renowned Subbuteo memorabilia collector Paul Hindmarsh – who came to watch the exciting games and join the social activities.

JUNIOR CATEGORY
untitled-2With a number of junior players unable to attend, it meant that Benjamin and the Briffa boys – Harrison and Alex – would compete for honours in a short simple single-leg round robin format.
Both Harrison and Benjamin won their match against Alex by an identical score line, which meant that the final match between the two would decide the winner. It was a tight match where gilt-edged chances fell to both players. On the day, Benjamin’s clinical finishing was the difference and he emerged victorious. The final score was 2-0 though it did not reflect the close balance of play.
Of special note is that the games were played with 2 x 15 minute halves, as opposed to the usual 10 minute halves. With the three juniors possibly competing at the Australian Grand Prix 2017 event in Sydney early next year, this was a good introduction (or refresher in Benjamin’s case) to the longer format.

OPEN CATEGORY
The 8 players in the Open category were split evenly into 2 groups, with the top 2 WASPA ranked players – Benny Ng and Benji Batten – spread across the groups. The rest were allocated randomly with the draw broadcast on Facebook Live. You can watch a repeat of the live broadcast draw video on the Western Flickers Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/WesternFlickers/).

untitled-3GROUP STAGES
The group results went pretty much as the rankings indicated.
In Group 1, Benji steamrolled through the opposition scoring big wins. On the other hand, Christos just managed to scrape through to the next round on a slightly better goal difference over the senior Briffa (Simon).
It was a much closer affair in Group 2 where former WASPA tournament winner David Simpson made an eagerly anticipated return to the sport after over a years’ absence. Despite being away for so long, he showed no signs of rustiness and held tournament top seed Benny to a goalless draw. With both David and Benny winning their remaining matches, it was to come down to goal difference. Thanks to Kevin’s masterful defending in his tie with David that kept the score down, Benny edged through to the semi-finals in group top position thus avoiding an early showdown with Benji in Group 1.

FINAL STAGES
untitled-4The semi-finals were all extremely close affairs. Benny defeated Christos is a tightly contested match 2-1, while Benji only got past David Simpson via a penalty shootout.
It was no different in the grand final with not much between the players. Both players managed to break through the opposing defence with some magnificent goals, but it was tied 2-2 at full time. A penalty shootout ensued and Benny emerged victorious, continuing on his recent run of good form to complete a hat-trick of WASPA titles in a row.

CONCLUSION
Thanks to all who attended for helping to make it another extremely successful Western Flickers WASPA event. Everyone had loads of fun playing the beautiful game and also enjoyed the camaraderie and food during the following BBQ. Table football was indeed the winner.

Western Flickers Table Football Club was formed to cater for players living on the north/west side of Melbourne and provide more opportunities to play the wonderful game of Subbuteo table football. If you are reading this and new to Subbuteo table football, watch this video (https://youtu.be/2GwgHF8IrXQ) for a brief introduction to the game.

It may have been the 2nd coldest (and probably wettest!) Melbourne day in history, but nothing was to stop Western Flickers from holding its 7th WASPA tournament. The event was staged at WTF’s Northern HQ – Meadow Park Soccer Club – a regular venue for social Friday Flicks but hosting its first tournament.
Despite the grim weather, there was a good turnout of 10 flickers in the Open category and 4 kids in the Junior category.

And away we go!

Junior Category
Four of our club juniors faced off for honours. With the Briffa boys – Harrison and Alex – improving with every game, “veterans” Benjamin and Aidan has their task cut out for them. The category was played as a simple round robin format. It was a close tussle in most of the games with little to separate the boys. In the end, the more experienced Benjamin won the category by only a single point over the promising Harrison.

The 10 players in the Open category were split into 3 groups. The top 3 WASPA ranked players – Luke Radziminski, Benny Ng and Adam Deverell – were spread across the groups and the rest randomly allocated.

Group Stages
The groups with Adam and Benny went to script according to WASPA rankings, but the real surprises were in Luke’s “Group of Death”. Beth Eveleigh – the “Queen of Australian Subbuteo” – put in a fantastic performance to hold MTFC president Luke to a goalless draw. This proved to be the key result of the group. With the returning Paul Mercer – once ranked the top player in Victoria – undefeated, it meant that he pipped Luke as group winner.
The other significant results of the first stage was draws achieved by newcomers Chris Hirst and Tim Kee (only his 3rd time playing table football!) against much more experienced opponents. Well done guys!

Pool Stages
In the Consolation Pool, Beth won the pool comfortably dominating all her matches comfortably. It was a close tussle between Simon and Chris Hirst for second spot, with Simon coming ahead on goal difference. While Tim was unable to repeat his feats in the Group stages, it was a really good performance in his very first WASPA tournament and the fact that he hadn’t even heard of Subbuteo a couple of months ago!

In the Plates pool, Christos Garagounis demonstrated his continued improvement by following up a good win against Kevin Grant with a magnificent 2-2 draw against the much higher ranked Luke. Luke still emerged as pool winner by goal difference.
With Paul and Benny winning their opening matches against Adam in the Winner’s pool, it meant that the final match between the two flickers would be the tournament decider. It was an exciting match-up with Paul attacking and Benny defending resolutely hoping to catch Paul out on the break. In the end, Benny’s counter attacks turned out to be the difference and won his second WASPA title in a row.

Conclusion
Thanks to all who attended for helping to make it another extremely successful Western Flickers WASPA event. Finally and most importantly, everyone has loads of fun and went home happy. Table football was indeed the winner.
GO WEST!
