The Ipswich Kestrels held their first monthly tournament over the weekend, again with 5 players contesting the league title following on from the Inaugural Ipswich Cup round held in June. The event took the form of a round robin group stage, then onto semi’s and then a final. Again a couple of the Brisbane SC boys – Rik and Giuseppe featured prominently during the day.
The first round saw last month’s BSC finalists Giuseppe and Andrew square off which resulted in a tight 1-1 draw, and Rik who managed a comfortable win over Rob 4 goals to 1.
In the second round, fresh of the bye, Ipswich Kestrels member Shane Robinson, delivered Rob another 4-1 defeat to open his account with a win. The second round saw long-time rivals Andrew and Rik face off, this time with Andrew taking the honours 3 goals to 2.
Round 3 had BSC team mates Giuseppe face Rik which end with goals either way, with Giuseppe ultimately edging out Rik 4-2. The second game saw Andrew defeating Shane 3-1 however the game was tighter than the score line suggested with 2 late goals from Andrew.
The fourth round had Giuseppe seeing off Shane with a steady, typically un-classy Italian 2-0 score line, with the second match turning into a bit of a blow out against a tiring Rob, with Andrew managing a score line of 10-1, giving the goal difference a health boost.
The final round robin matches pitted Rik against Shane, with Rik taking the honours 3-0. Shane started out promisingly, however Rik showed his class to close out the match. The final match saw Rob face Giuseppe in one of the tightest ties of the day, with Giuseppe coming out on top 2 goals to 1. Rob must be commended for his efforts, managing to score in every game he played, showing stead improvements after some health issues earlier in the year.
Moving on to the Semi Finals. The pairings saw BSC team mates again face off, however unlike round 2, Rik managing to get the better of Giuseppe with a score line of 1-0. The second match saw the top seed Andrew, face Shane with Andrew taking the match 4-2, however again, the match was much tighter than the result suggested, with the score line at 2-2 until the final few minutes.
So moving to the final, and you guessed it – this would see old foes Rik facing Andrew in a rivalry closely resembling the heights of an Old Firm match. 3 from the last 4 finals across both club competitions have feature these 2 chargers. The match started out slowly and cautiously both players doing a lot of defending, both conceding early, and then Rik going 2-1 up. Andrew however pulled the score line back to 2-2 before the break. The second half start much the same as the first however without the goals, much defending, with many attacks breaking down before they really got going. Then, halfway through the final term, as if a light switch was flicked, Andrew exploded with 2 quick goals which all but took the game away from Rik. The score finishing 4-2 and another victory on home soil for Andrew.
Ipswich Kestrels wish our members luck in the upcoming Brisbane SC event this weekend. Look out for following news regarding the Ipswich Tournament date for August.
