Singapore confirmed their crown as the preeminent table football nation in Asia with victories in the Open Individual event, Club Teams and National Teams events at the 7th Asian Cup of Table Football.
Michael Choong (SGP/Subbuteo Dragons HK) beat Australia’s Peter Thomas (Melbourne TFC) in the Open final, while Jurong Central TFC (SGP) beat Melbourne TFC (AUS) in the teams tournament. Rounding out the day, Singapore claimed that national teams title, beating Australia in the decider, 3-0. The Singapore B team were also victorious in their friendly match against Australia B.
Australia did have some success, with Catherine Palamara (AUS/Sydney TFC) taking the Women’s title, and Tim Phokos (AUS/The Tumbleweeds) winning the U20 event. The Australian women’s national team, the ‘Table Tillies’, took the unofficial women’s match against Japan 1-0.
Across the two days of competition, a total of 279 matches in 10 different events were played between players from Australia, Singapore Japan and New Zealand, an enormous feat. Most significantly, the organisation stayed close to schedule – in large part due to the efforts of results manager Paul Mercer, and event MCs, Adrian Elmer, Benji Batten and Eliot Kennedy. This was critical to ensure cooperation with the venue operators, Ultra Football, who allowed for some flexibility at the end of the first day.
A huge thanks also to our tournament Sponsors and Supporters, whose vital contributions made the entire weekend possible, main sponsor, Arrow Sports, and supporters, EnviroSun/Energie Group, Oz Flick, WMC Handyman Services, Slick Flicks and Conte.
Individual event reports will be published soon.
